International dystonia organisations and charities

Each type of dystonia is rare, and we need to work at an international level to identify best practice and achieve the best outcomes in research and development. We engage with several major organisations, and this enables us to give more weight to the voices of dystonia patients in the UK.

Our main international relationships are with:

Dystonia Europe

Expand

Dystonia Europe has 22 national member organisations from 18 countries. In July 2019 we jointly organised a major conference in London. You can find recordings of presentations at the conference on Dystonia Europe’s YouTube channel.

Dystonia Medical Research Foundation

Expand

Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF) is the leading organisation in the United States that supports patients and promotes research. We are privileged to work alongside them and other patient advocacy groups as part of the Dystonia Coalition. We are acutely aware that due to the rarity of dystonia and the complexity and variety of symptoms, real progress can only be made through collaborative cross border working. In particular an international effort is needed to drive forward the research agenda by providing critical mass for both numbers of patients but also the effective targeting of funding and resources. We are committed members of the Dystonia Coalition because we see this as the best structure to achieve these aims.

Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Canada

Expand

The mission of the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation Canada (DMRFC) is to advance research for more treatments and ultimately a cure; to promote awareness and education; and to support the needs and wellbeing of affected individuals and families. We primarily work together to help raise awareness of dystonia across the globe. We have been especially pleased to have their support with our awareness raising campaign Dystonia Around the World.

European Federation of Neurological Associations

Expand

The European Federation of Neurological Associations (EFNA) brings together European umbrella organisations of neurological patient advocacy groups, to work with other associations in the field of neurology, including the European Academy of Neurology (EAN), in what has been termed a "Partnership for Progress". The strength of EFNA lies within its membership which spans a wide variety of neurological, or related, disorders. This gives EFNA a constituency to support its advocacy work for neurology patients across Europe. We are linked with EFNA through our membership of Dystonia Europe.

The cause of dystonia is not yet fully understood, in some cases at least it can be attributed to a chemical imbalance in the part of the brain called the basal ganglia, a part which helps to control movement.
