Dr Antonella Macerollo is a Consultant Neurologist with a clinical interest in movement disorders and related advanced therapies. She runs clinics dedicated to all types of movement disorders as well as general neurology clinics as part of her clinical duties at The Walton Centre in Liverpool. Moreover, she is part of the deep brain stimulation team dedicated to the surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease, tremor and dystonic syndromes. She also delivers botulinum toxin injections as part of services dedicated to treat dystonic syndromes.

In 2022, The Walton Centre was awarded a machine, by NHS England, to deliver MRI guided focus ultrasound to treat essential tremor and Dr Macerollo is part of the team currently delivering this procedure in the North West UK.

Dr Macerollo has a significant academic background. She was awarded a PhD in Neuroscience at the University College of London in 2018 under the supervision of Prof. Patricia Limousin and Prof. Mark Edwards. It was entitled “The role of sensory afference in Parkinson's disease". She was awarded in 2019 the prestigious 2.5 years NIHR North West Coast Research Scholarship followed by the 1-year NIHR North West Coast Advanced Research Scholarship in 2023.

Dr Macerollo is the coordinator of research for undergraduate students at The Walton Centre. Her current research is focused on the development of neuroimaging biomarkers for early diagnosis and predictive outcome of deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and tremor. Moreover, new area of her research is MRI guided focus ultrasound for tremor patients. She is also developing a study to improve the equality access to functional neurosurgery for patients with movement disorders.

Among Dr Macerollo’s awards are the prestigious International Scholarship Award of the American Academy of Neurology (2015) and the Investigator Award of the European Academy of Neurology (2016). She is a very active member of the European Academy of Neurology and was the Editor of the website in 2022. She is honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Liverpool and University of Manchester. She is visiting researcher at Manchester Metropolitan University. Dr Macerollo is a Member of the Research and Academic Medicine Committee (RAMC) of the Royal College of Physicians. In 2022 she was appointed as Specialty Research Lead Neuro & Degeneration for the NIHR Clinical Research Network North West Coast (CRN NWC) and is currently Associate Clinical Lead for the Research Scholars Programme, NIHR Clinical Research Network North West Coast.

She has been recently appointed as Regional Clinical Lead of the Parkinson’s Excellence Network for the North West Region by the PD UK.
